- Courses
designed specifically for non-native speakers of English:
- WRIT
1301 NNS section (University Writing): Students
with TOEFL scores between 550-599 may register for an NNS section
of WRIT 1301. Contact Sheryl Holt, the Coordinator for Non-Native
Speakers of English (337 Nolte Center; 612-624-4524, holtx001@tc.umn.edu).
- WRIT
5051 (Graduate Research Writing Practice for Non-Native Speakers
of English): This graduate-level class focuses on writing techniques/formats
for summaries, critiques, research, and abstracts, and focuses on
persuasion, documentation, structure, grammar, vocabulary, and field-specific
requirements. Students write several drafts using a mentor in their
specific fields of study.
- WRIT
5052 (Graduate Research Presentations and Conference Writing for
Non-Native Speakers of English): This course involves practice in
writing/presenting graduate-level research for conferences or professional
seminars and in delivery of professional academic presentations to U.S.
audiences, including a conference abstract, paper, and poster presentation.
Students select topics from their own research/studies to practice
communication in the research process. Format, style, transitions,
topic narrowing, and non-verbal presentation skills will be developed.
