teaching with writing

research strategies in music

When students move from responses and critiques to researched, analytical reports, they typically rely on historical and comparative evidence to supplement their attention to such formal structures as harmony and rhythm. Students often find highly technical prose in these sources, which they may try to emulate. Technical prose does not always integrate smoothly into creative interpretations, however! Learning where to find appropriate information and becoming skilled at reading secondary materials with a discerning eye and then incorporating germane data appropriately into written work takes practice, and at times, explicit modeling.
