The First Year of a Writing Center (roundtable presentation)

Megan Blaha, Jenna McGuire, Kai Waterhouse, Jennifer Claflin (Hastings)
A collaborative discussion between different Writing Center programs about the variety of methods used to start a Writing Center, recruit writing coaches and execute promotion ideas. A small group of writing coaches would present their school’s statistics and methods of promotion (collaboration with the Marketing department), and pose questions about further strategies for the upcoming years. The group would also emphasize the importance of using the right language during a writing session or promotional stage, such as stating the role of a writing coach versus a student writer.

The Effects of Being a Writing Coach (poster presentation)

Faith Quist (Minnetonka High School)
Being a writing coach could be more beneficial for you than you think! Come to this poster presentation to learn about the effects that being a writing coach has on someone both personally and academically. In my first year as a writing coach, I find that I have changed in so many ways beyond having a better understanding of writing, so I wondered if other writing coaches had the same experience. Researching multiple scholarly studies, I found that much research has accumulated to find that many former writing coaches do experience similar developments in both personal and academic improvement.

Providing Optimal Feedback (poster presentation)

Ellie McRae, Maya Schrof (Minnetonka High School)
Do you want to learn more about providing effective feedback? In the realm of writing centers, balance between tutor and writer participation is often thought of as the key to conference success. Given the foundation that feedback often drives the conversation forward, we inquired, “What is the relationship between writers’ perceptions and tutors’ delivery of feedback, and how can tutors construct feedback for the optimal effect on the writer?” This poster session explores strategies on how tutors can optimize the delivery and content of their feedback (including tone, word choice, specificity, and more) for the best effect on writers.
