Young Writers Conference, 2011

link to 2011 anthology cover pageOver a period of three days, students and teachers from four Saint Paul Schools—Farnsworth Aerospace Magnet preK-8, Humboldt Junior High, Murray Junior High, and Ramsey Junior High—viewed, learned, and wrote about the Bell Museum of Natural History exhibit Sustainable Shelter: Dwellings Within the Forces of Nature

To immerse students in the observation practices of nonfiction writing, each student was given a notebook to fill with words, images, ideas, and reactions to the various dioramas and models in the sustainable shelter exhibit, including the Icon Solar House. To further inspire student engagement with nature-based writing, teacher/author Larry Gavin shared some of his own writing from his published collection, Least Resistance.

The students worked in writing groups led by University of Minnesota graduate students in education and Saint Paul teachers. In addition to writing poems and short stories about nature and animals, students wrote essays about the environment and conservation, all of which are featured in this year’s online anthology.
