Teaching with Connected Learning: the 8th Annual Fall Workshop, 11 October 2014

This year’s Fall Workshop focused on the theme of Teaching with Connected Learning. Paul Oh, a Senior Program Associate of the National Writing Project who works on digital literacy initiatives, was our featured guest. He gave us an overview of Connected Learning in a Connected World and then led us in an interactive learning experience in which we hacked our writing notebooks, using paper circuitry and lights to illuminate our ideas. Next, Steph Rollag (ISI 2009), doctoral student in Critical Literacy English Education in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Minnesota and MWP graduate assistant; Michelle Shaw (ISI 2008); and Mary Moeller (Open Institute 2012), Valley View Middle School in Bloomington, spoke about the Teaching in the Connected Learning Book Club and MOOC that they took part in.

Three informative breakout sessions included lessons and resources related to teaching with Connected Learning. Lanka Liyanapathiranga (ISI 2014), Woodbury Middle School, presented " Conversations on Peace." Nick Ross (ISI 2013) demonstrated how he teaches "Artful Writing with Local and Global Murals" in his 7th grade English class at Columbia Academy in Columbia Heights. The third session consisted of Steph Rollag and Erin Mohr (ISI 2012), Valley View Middle School in Bloomington, and teachers from the New Millennium Academy with whom they are working under an NWP Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) High-Need School Grant.
