This year’s Fall Workshop focused on the themes of community, cross-cultural awareness, justice, and literacy. Participants enjoyed an entertaining and thought-provoking keynote session by Jonathan Odell, storyteller and author of The View from Delphi and The Healing. The workshop also included an opportunity to learn more about our collaboration with the Trondheim (Norway) Writing Project, including reflections from some of our visiting Norwegian teachers.
Three informative breakout sessions included lessons and resources related to teaching for social justice. Tessa Flynn, Children’s Theatre Company, presented on “Exploring Cultural Assimilation Through Drama” for upper elementary students. Abby Rombalski, doctoral student in Critical Literacy in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Minnesota and Paideia trainer at Augsburg College, facilitated a Paideia Seminar on “Making Sense of Mirrors: Reflecting from Words to Action.” And Daniel Muro LaMere, teacher at Humboldt High School in St. Paul, presented on “Argument Writing: Generating a Thesis” using social justice related texts.
