graduate minor in literacy & rhetorical studies

Ph.D. planning form

Doctoral: minimum 4 courses, 12 credits

One graduate seminar or course in each of the following categories:


1. Literacy theory or practice, including pedagogy
2. Research methods and practices in one of the areas of the minor
3. A historical topic, e.g., history of the book, or of rhetoric, or of literacy

Only one of the three courses can be from the home department.

After the three courses have been completed, either

  • a capstone writing seminar

    or


  • a seminar which involves a substantial term paper or a completed dissertation chapter on a topic related to the minor. The seminar and paper topic must be approved beforehand by the DGS.

At the preliminary oral and final oral exams, one member of the committee must represent the Minor (and be on the Minor faculty list), and can be either inside or outside the student's home department. The adviser cannot count as the Minor's representative.
